Status Updates on Plastics Pollution in Aquatic Environment
net accumulation of plastic debris along beaches, in surface waters, throughout the water column, and in bottom sediments (Ryan and Moloney 1990, Barnes et al. 2009). Aquatic systems are said to be the sinks for pre- and post-consumer plastic and there are complex negative impacts of plastic pollution
The company, located in a low-slung office park in Berkeley, has designed a washing machine–size device that uses electricity to convert water and CO 2 from the air into fuels and other molecules, with no need for oil. At the other end of the commercial scale is Siemens, the manufacturing conglomerate based in Munich, Germany.

Legal Protection of the Marine Environment from Vessel-Source
Tanzania's domestic laws promote sustainable development of the marine environment; however, since the beginning of the 21st century, the country has been importing large quantities of oil
By Benoit-Ivan Wansi – Published on July 6 2022 / Modified on July 6 2022 In Tanzania, eight brewing companies are joining forces to form the Polyethylene Terephthalate Recycle Company (PETCO). The initiative will collect and recycle 12.5 million tons of plastic waste in the East African country. Tanzania produces 14,800 tons of waste per day, 48% of which is […]

Plastic pollution, explained, EHN
Are there laws against plastic pollution? Plastic shopping bags are one of the greatest contributors to plastic waste. (Credit: Peteruetz/Wikipedia) Another reason plastic waste and pollution has amassed so quickly is the lack of legislation regulating plastics.
Treaty timeline. In 2022, 175 nations at the United Nations Environment Assembly agreed to draft a legally binding treaty against plastic pollution by 2024. That work is now underway, but progress

Plastic recycling: A panacea or environmental pollution problem
Increasing plastic waste is a critical global challenge to ecological and human health requiring focused solutions to reduce omnipresent plastic pollution in the environment. While recycling has
The problem of plastic pollution . With the increased consumption and urbanisation of our society comes more plastic waste. Around 12 million tonnes of plastic makes its way into the world’s oceans every year. Environmentalists and NGOs are calling for better waste management of plastics.

PREYO TZ | PANORAMA
The Plastic Recycling and Youth Empowerment Organisation, PREYO TZ- is registered Tanzania’s youth startup aiming to reduce the plastic pollution problem in Tanzania and Africa at large. We are driven by the urge to end the waste pollution problems in cities by turning waste into valuable commodities.
Pollution In Tanzania’s major towns and cities, solid and liquid wastes are left untreated. As a result, air and water are contaminated with pollutants, a major health hazard for those who live in under-privileged areas.
- How much plastic waste is produced in Tanzania?
- Per capita plastic waste generation is around 5.6 kg/year which is lower than the world average of 29 kg/year. It is estimated that only 40% of the plastic waste is collected. 4% of the plastic waste is collected for recycling. Because there are no sanitary landfill and incineration facilities, there is no proper disposal of waste in Tanzania.
- Why does plastic waste leak in Tanzania?
- Plastic waste leaks in Tanzania because there is no proper disposal of waste in either sanitary landfills or incineration facilities, hence all collected waste that is not recycled accumulates in dumpsites. Low collection rates across the country reduce the amount of waste available to recyclers and increase leakage.
- Which polymer has the highest waste generation in Tanzania?
- PP is the top polymer by absolute leakage with 7.1 kt. It is the polymer with the highest waste generation. There is only 1 tonne of PP that is collected for recycling, which corresponds to around 1% of the plastic waste generated. As a consequence, since there is no proper disposal of waste in Tanzania, 99% of PP is mismanaged.
- How can we improve plastic consumption in Tanzania?
- Conduct waste generation characterisation studies at household level in additional cities and rural areas. Identify touristic hubs in the country and carry out surveys to better understand plastic consumption patterns of tourists. The average collection rate in Tanzania is 40%.
- What is the value of recycled plastics for waste pickers in Tanzania?
- Value of recycled plastics for waste pickers seems higher than in some other African countries. Due to the absence of sanitary landfills and incinerators, there is no proper disposal of waste in Tanzania. Burning of waste is a widespread practice in Tanzania. Plastic recycling is not well understood and could not be properly assessed.
- Why is there no sanitary landfill in Tanzania?
- Because there are no sanitary landfill and incineration facilities, there is no proper disposal of waste in Tanzania. 96% of the plastic waste is mismanaged and can potentially leak to the oceans, rivers and lakes of Tanzania. 29 thousand tonnes of plastic leaked to ocean, rivers and lakes in 2018. That is around 9% of the waste generated.
